Patel School Director Dr. Vairavamoorthy attended the prestigious Stockholm World Water Week in late August 2011. During his trip, he delivered a keynote talk on water and climate, chaired the Cities of the Future session, and attended numerous high-level meetings and events including an award ceremony with H.M. King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden.

Stockholm World Water Week is the leading international conference on the topics of water, development and sustainability. The conference began in 1991 and today over 2,000 people and 200 organizations participate in the annual conference.

“In my talk in relation to energy efficiency in the water sector for developing countries, I emphasized that in developing countries we need to first recognize the ground realities, fix poor systems so they provide a decent level of service to water consumers (particularly the poor) and then (and only then) should we look for system efficiency that minimize energy etc.” said Dr. Vairavamoorthy, regarding just one of his activities.

World Water Week is hosted and organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) and takes place each year in Stockholm where the Stockholm Water Prize, Stockholm Junior Water Prize, and the Stockholm Industry Water Award are awarded throughout the conference. The 2011 World Water Week theme was: “Water in an Urbanizing World”. Watch a video of Dr. Vairavamoorthy’s August 24th, Respondent/Reflections – Water, Energy & Food in the Urban Context.
