New M.A. Students Begin Interdisciplinary Seminar

Aug 24, 2011

posted in: M. A.

Thirty students arrived at the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Center on Saturday August, 13, for the M.A. in Global Sustainability program?s interdisciplinary seminar. After introducing themselves to one another, they listened to a series of presentations by members of the USF community, most of which were filmed for online students by the Media Innovation Team.

The interdisciplinary seminar is a weeklong program featuring lectures, workshops, field trips to a solid waste-to-energy facility in Pinellas County, a wild dolphin eco-tour and the Florida Aquarium (photos). The purpose of the interdisciplinary seminar is to bring together the esteemed professors, faculty members and students from each of the disciplines featured in the M.A. program.

The program kicked off with a lively reception and opening remarks from Dr. Ralph Wilcox, Provost and Executive Vice President for the University of South Florida. The reception also featured keynote remarks from Dr. Avner Adin from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, on manipulating the water cycle for a sustainable future city.

?I really enjoyed [it] and I really fed off the excitement that the students projected. The staff has worked very hard to ensure that they get the best experience possible. I kept hearing comments from the students regarding how much the seminar solidified what this degree is about,? said Randall Pape, Academic Advisor for the School of Global Sustainability. ?Bringing together the numerous backgrounds of the faculty and the students brings to life the truly interdisciplinary nature of this degree.?
